RESPONSIBILITIES OF

GOVERNOR

  • State's highest-ranking elected official.

  • State's CEO.

  • Reports to the General Assembly and citizens of Indiana on the condition of the state each January. 

  • Recommends legislation.

  • Reviews bills approved by the Indiana House and Senate.

  • Reviews and signs legislation to become a law.

  • Issue executive orders on matters important to the state. 

  • Serves as commander-in-chief of the state's armed forces.

Term: 4 years

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

  • State's second-ranking elected official.

  • Serves as acting governor when the governor becomes incapacitated. 

  • Responsible for presiding over the Senate and casting the deciding vote, when required. 

  • Serves as Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development.

  • Oversees the Office of Community and Rural Affairs, Office of Energy Development, Indiana Housing and Community Authority, and the Office of Tourism Development. 

Term: 4 years

ATTORNEY GENERAL

  • Represents Indiana in every lawsuit in which the state has an interest. 

  • Handles appeals from criminal convictions. 

  • Unofficially advises the governor, state elected officials, and members of the General Assembly. 

  • Serves on the Law Enforcement Training Advisory Council, Criminal Justice Advisory Council, Code Revision Commission, Indiana Grain Indemnity, and the Criminal Law Enforcement Board of Trustees. 

Term: 4 years

AUDITOR

  • State's Chief Financial Officer 

  • Performs accounting for all state funds.

  • Oversees and distributes county, city, town and school tax distributions. 

  • Pays all state bills, including state employees.

  • Serves on the Board of Finance and Board of Depositories.  

Term: 4 years

SECRETARY OF STATE

  • State's third-ranking office. 

  • Maintains state records.

  • Preserves state seal. 

  • Oversees chartering of new business, regulation of the securities industry, state elections, notaries public, registration of trademarks and licensing of vehicle dealerships throughout the state. 

Term: 4 years

TREASURER OF STATE

  • State's chief investment officer. 

  • Member of Board of Finance and the Indiana Finance Authority. 

  • Serves as chairman of the Indiana Bond Bank, Wireless Enhanced 9-1-1 Board, and Indiana College Choice 529 Savings Plan. 

Term: 4 years

STATE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

  • Creates laws for the State of Indiana

  • Establishes a state budget

  • Has the ability to raise and lower taxes

Term: 2 years

STATE SENATE

  • Creates laws for the State of Indiana

  • Establishes a state budget

  • Has the ability to raise and lower taxes
