RISE NWI DEDICATED TO STRENGTHENING
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT THROUGHOUT THE REGION
In 2017, Sarah Ferraro and Ryan Strode partnered to develop a series of workshops on civic engagement for residents in Northwest Indiana. Civic Engagement Boot Camp trained over 150 residents through a series of free workshops on running for office, voter contact, field work and registering voters. Through these workshops 25 residents who completed the program ran for office in 2018 - all who were previously new to the political world.
In late 2017, Sarah and Ryan began writing a grant to strengthen their efforts. Being awarded a grant from Legacy Foundation's John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Donor Advised Fund provided an opportunity to expand efforts. Civic Engagement Boot Camp formally became RiseNWI and is now a program of Legacy Foundation.
We believe everyone should be actively engaged and have a voice within their community.
RiseNWI is a trusted non-partisan source for education related to local government and opportunities to become civically engaged within one's community. We empower local citizens to be strong advocates for improved quality of life in Northwest Indiana. Through training, resources, and networking we equip all citizens to be active participants in their communities.
Our programs are versatile to the unique needs of each community in Lake County, Indiana. Examples of past programming includes:
"Local Elections Matter," a workshop to provide an overview of upcoming elections.
Vote411 Candidate Surveys, a partnership with the League of Women Voters of the Calumet Area to conduct non-partisan candidate surveys to assist voters in learning about their candidates.
"I Can Be Civic Too," a program developed for school-aged children to educate them on what they can be doing in their communities, even though they are not of age to vote.
We also develop year-round digital resources to provide information on upcoming deadlines, fast facts, and more. Visit our Facebook page to see our most recent published graphics!
